For the month of June, we continue to focus on the pressing topic of port congestion around the world, especially the congestion from Asian ports as well as the current challenges and delays as reported across all South African ports.South African PortsBerthing delays experienced across all ports in South Africa continue between 10-16 days in Durban and on average 5- 8 days at Coega and Cape Town ports. We highlight in the images below, vessels currently at anchorage outside Durban, Cape Town and Gqeberha (Coega) pending berth. Berthing delays especially in Durban continues with a window period of 2-3 weeks. We specifically make mention of theDolphin II which arrived outside durban the 9th June and will wait at anchorage to berth approx. 21 days. As per Pacific International,this is due to the congestion and slow operations currently experienced at Durban Pier 2. Transnet is currently trying to improve thisturn around time. Carrier schedules are still erratic, and we continue to see changes to voyages last minute, vessels with split discharge and port omissions. LOCAL PORT DELAYS RECORDED African & Indian Ocean Islands MSC has recently changed their routing for services to East Africa. Containers leaving ex Durban destined for Maputo, Dar es Salaam and Mombasa will now tranship in Coega before heading northbound thus resulting in increased transit times achieved vs what has been published on their online schedules . Global Port Congestion and Statistics USA terminal updates this week: New York/New Jersey – Vessel waiting time is up to 3 days. Turn times for Port Liberty Terminal Bayonne are running higher due to 1 RMG stack being out of service until June 7, 2024. Norfolk – Vessel waiting time is up to 3 days. Charleston – Vessel waiting time is up to 4 days. Continuing to experience delays due to toe wall construction, a cargo spill on June 6, 2024, was not as severe as the last one and mostly contained onboard causing additional delays. Cleanup is in process, so far, a 14-hour delay expected at the berth. Contingency plan in place to shift to HLT if cleanup cannot be completed by 17:00 hrs. on June 7, 2024. Savannah – Vessel waiting time is up to 5 days. Effective July 7, 2024, Georgia Ports will begin locking vessels expected to be at berth and working July 15, 2024. The first day of receiving (ERD) will be at 04:00 hrs. – 7 days prior to the vessel going to work. The terminal cut will be set at 16:00 hrs. – 2 days prior to the vessel going to work. Miami/Port Everglades – Vessel waiting time is up to 4 days. Houston – Vessel waiting time is up to 2 days. Los Angeles/Long Beach – Vessel waiting time is up to 1 day. Seattle – No waiting time at this port. Terminal 18 will be closed on June 7, 14, 19 and 24, 2024. Husky will have a Saturday gate on June 8, 2024. Oakland – Vessel waiting time is up to 2 days. Port of Oakland has started the bollard and fender replacement project at OICT, starting with Berth 55 through Berth 59. Project is expected to last into Q1 of 2025. Singapore Current berthing delays of 3 days at this port. Delays experienced due to bunching of vessels and ongoing congestion. FCL containers transhipping in Singapore have expected delays 3-4 weeks. Port Congestion Crisis Nearly half of all Asia-Europe westbound sailings have failed to depart on time due to escalating port congestion in Asian ports. The latest data from Linerlytica reveals that only six out of 11 Asia-North Europe sailings departed on schedule last week, significantly disrupting the market.
