Dear Valued Client,
Importers and exporters are reminded to inspect all containers upon loading and destuffing to prevent additional charges from the shipping lines. Container hygiene and damage remain the responsibility of the supplier and consignee as per the bill of lading terms. However, accurate record keeping allows for valid claims to be made when applicable.
Best Practices for Container Hygiene & Damage Prevention are suggested below:
- Inspect for cracks, rust, leaks, or damages at time of receipt of container- loading and destuffing
- Record and photograph both internal and external condition of the container
- Use proper packaging and dunnage to secure cargo upon loading OR remove all dunnage/strapping from container upon unpack
- Ensure the interior of the container is cleaned, including removal of any tank liners
- Remove all external stickers before returning the empty container to the shipping line
As per MSC’s Landside Tariff, a fee of R850 per container will apply for the removal of hazardous stickers within the depot. A kind reminder to please maintain adequate records in case the shipping line disputes the condition of the empty return.
