1. Update: Airfreight Situation
The status with regard to flights globally in and out of South Africa remains incredibly volatile and is changing daily. The number of cancelled flights is significant and this obviously has added to serious backlogs and space constraints. Schedules even after being published are subject to change daily. The obvious result too is that freight rates are increasing on most routes as airlines are able to do so because of volume demand. Please see herein a summary provided to us by Air Menzies this morning – note days referred to herein refer to days of departure and not necessarily arrival.
2. SAPS – Cocaine Seized at Durban Port
Cocaine with a street value of approximately R 240 million was seized this week at Durban Port, SAPS advise that the drugs were hidden underneath the floor panels of a shipping container. We have noted an increase in SAPS and Customs stops recently, and it nice to see that the stops do sometimes bear fruit.
3. Cargo Theft on the Rise
There has been a noted increase of cargo theft from the areas surrounding the port and this week an entire trailer full of copper was taken from Maydon Wharf. We would like to remind clients of the importance of full insurance on your cargo, if you are not covered under our Prestmarine policy and would like a quote please email christy.jennings@sctsolutions.co.za. SCT has an established partnership with a well-respected company providing armed escorts for the cargo of some of our clients. If you are concerned and would like to investigate this option, please let us know.
